System Link vs Xbox Live vs stealth

Not every 360 online question is a stealth question. System Link is local (and sometimes tunneled) multiplayer that a lot of 2005–2010 games still speak. Xbox Live is Microsoft’s account-and-friends stack. Stealth is how a modified console tries to look retail while using that stack. Bad Update 1.3 did not merge those three words. RGH3 did not either. Searching “360 LAN RGH” and “XBLStealth” as synonyms is how a living-room Halo 3 night becomes a KV panic.

System Link is still the honest LAN

Same switch, same game SKU, System Link enabled. No Gold required in the old sense. No stealth plugin required. A Trinity RGH3, a Winchester on XeUnshackle, and a retail unmodded Jasper can often still see each other if the title supports it and the network is not isolating IoT devices. Ethernet beats Corona Wi-Fi modules that died in 2018.

Tunneling System Link over the internet (the old “XLink” genre of tools) is a PC-side hobby. It is not XBLStealth. It does not unban a vault. It does not need Dashlaunch live flags. If your friends list is empty and the LAN still works, you are not in a ban wave. You are in 2007, which is a compliment.

Live is accounts plus console identity

Signing in uses a profile (account) and a machine (KeyVault). People blame stealth when the profile is locked, when Gold/Game Pass entitlements changed after Marketplace closure, or when dashboard 17559 cannot complete a handshake. Live in 2026 still exists in pieces. Stealth cannot mint a Microsoft account. A KV cannot log you into someone else’s gamertag. See the profiles note.

Stealth is only the Live-shaped pipe

If you need matchmaking that still phones home, you are in session-layer land: launch.ini plugin on RGH3, or a XeUnshackle USB plugin list that actually loads. System Link nights should disable the folklore pile so you are not debugging Cipher checker lore during splitscreen.

Party test: four consoles, one switch, no internet uplink. If Halo works, stealth is idle. If it fails, it is SKU, IP isolation, or Wi-Fi — not kv.bin.

When Live is the actual goal, identity uniqueness still decides whether twenty “offline” dumps become twenty corpses the day someone plugs WAN in. That is why this site talks about vaults to LAN-only people. Ethernet is a lifestyle change, not a personality.
