Profiles, Gold, and why a KeyVault is not a gamertag
A 360 profile is a Microsoft account shaped object: gamertag, friends, saves tied to that profile, old Gold entitlements. A KeyVault is the console’s passport. CPU key is NAND crypto. Stealth is a pipe. When Live says no, I ask which of those four failed. “I got banned” is not a diagnosis. It is a mood.
What a console ban looks like versus an account ban
If every profile on the machine fails and a borrowed profile also fails, you are in hardware-identity land: kv.bin seen before, shared pack, wave. If one Microsoft account is locked on a phone and a second account signs into the same RGH3, your vault may be fine. People flash new KVs because their gamertag caught a suspension. That is how you spend money and still cannot play as that tag.
Gold / Game Pass branding in 2026 is a mess on 360 because the storefront story changed. Some titles still check subscriptions. Some do not. Marketplace closure did not delete accounts. It deleted a shop. Offline profiles still live on HDD; FATXplorer can copy them. Copying a profile is not copying a vault. Copying a vault onto a second Trinity is how you duplicate a passport.
Bad Update sessions and “I’m signed in but unsigned”
XeUnshackle can make a Winchester feel like RGH3 until power-off. Profiles on the disk remain. Live still sees the retail KV. Do not install Dashlaunch to flash to “save the profile.” You will save nothing and lose a NAND.
Saves, licenses, and the HDD
Arcade licenses and DLC folklore are account- and console-tied in ways that still confuse 2011. A new unshared vault on the same HDD does not magically re-license every XBLA title. A new HDD with the old vault still has the old passport. Backup NAND and backup profiles as separate folders. Label them. Future-you is tired.
If the machine identity is actually burned, that is the ban wave article — not a new Aurora skin, not a new Microsoft password. If you only wanted LAN, stay on System Link and stop feeding Live your dump.
